Tasmac to lift spirits of tipplers in Kerala

Indian Made Foreign Liquor is on a mission to fill the vacuum of liquor ban
Kozhikode: For boozers staring at a “bar-less” future following the state government’s move for phased prohibition, there is 'spirited' news from across the border. Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation Limited (Tasmac), the Government agency that sells Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) there, is on a mission to fill the vacuum. It will open more outlets in villages bordering Kerala wherever possible, according to Tasmac officials.
“We have already leased out rooms for retail shops in border villages of Pandallur taluk in Nilgiri district bordering Wayanad and search is on for rented facilities in all districts bordering Kerala”, a TASMAC official said. “We have already finished formalities and are ready to open them any time”, he said, adding that the agency was waiting for the final node from higher ups.
The target is to open 10 outlets along the border in Wayanad. In other border districts like Malappuram and Idukki with jungles in between, more TASMAC outlets would be allotted in the immediate border villages after the jungles within TN, the official said.
V.Jagadjyothi, Revenue Divisional Officer of Gudalur, Nilgiris, said moves were on to open more outlets in villages close to the border where there were no TASMAC outlets. "It has nothing to do with the decision of Kerala State", he said, adding that the outlets would be functional soon.
Meanwhile, Christian groups and various women's outfits have already started a campaign against the move which they fear would hit the peaceful social life in these villages. Vicar of Kayyunni Fathima Matha Church Fr Johnny Kallupura said a signature campaign was already on and various modes of protests were on the anvil. "If you bring liquor to every doorstep it is easy to ruin the agrarian family set up", he said adding that some of the villages notorious for crimes committed by boozers had just returned to normal after the church's crusade against liquor in the region.
