Hurriyat claims J&K govt blocked its FB page

Police, however, said they have no information about the whole issue.

Hurriyat Conference led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Wednesday alleged that the Jammu and Kashmir government has blocked the official Facebook page of the group. Police, however, maintained that they have no information on the matter.

“Yesterday, our official Facebook page was removed from the Internet. The page, which has been removed from the Internet, is available outside India,” Hurriyat Conference (M) spokesperson Shahid-ul-Islam told The Indian Express. “Our official page had thousands of likes and its removal is a clear case of frustration.”

Shahid said that “ban” on Hurriyat activities on Facebook was a direct attack on freedom to “opine and express”. “The way in which the government is imposing restriction on the social media sites is despotic,” he said, adding, “It amply demonstrates the severe curbs on the freedom of expression in Kashmir.”

Police, however, said they have no information about the whole issue. “I have no information about the statement of the Hurriyat (M),” IGP Kashmir Abdul Gani Mir said.
