The newest WNBA assistant coach is an inspiring 11-year-old named Mia

The Phoenix Mercury named 11-year-old Mia McPoland an honorary assistant coach for the team’s playoff run in an effort to bring awareness to bone marrow donation, the team announced this week.

The cheery Mercury fan, who suffers from a rare bone marrow failure syndrome called Diamond Blackfan Anemia, has had 113 blood transfusions throughout her short life, her mom said.

She’s hoping that with the Mercury, she can help find herself and many others a bone marrow match, but in the meantime is helping inspire the team and talk strategy — and she even brought cupcakes for one of the player’s birthdays.
