Modi Japan trip: Bullet train project on agenda

JICA and French railway are involved in feasibility study of the Rs 62,000 crore Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project.

Talks on India’s maiden bullet train corridor between Ahmedabad and Mumbai are expected to feature in a big way during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Japan on August 30. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which is carrying out a joint study with India on the 534-km corridor, is expected to submit its second report in November. There is a possibility of extended areas of cooperation in other proposed bullet train corridors as well.

Sources said the cooperation in the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor might get crystallised. Asked about the possibility of an agreement on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high speed corridor, Railway Board chairman Arunendra Kumar declined to comment.

Currently, the JICA and French railway are involved in the feasibility study of the Rs 62,000 crore Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project.

On the progress of the bullet train project, Kumar said, “JICA has submitted the preliminary report last month and the second report with more details is expected any time now. The third and final report will be submitted by June 15.”

While the French report will focus on the project’s business development model, JICA’s study will cover alignment, scheduling, tariff, technology, traffic, funding pattern, environment and social impact, passenger profile, number of station among other aspects.

Festive offer

“JICA’s first report was discussed in detail at the board and now we are awaiting the next report,” Kumar said. Rail Budget has allocated Rs 100 crore for preparatory work for the bullet train project.
