Exclusive: Controversial 'America' sets home release

Dinesh D'Souza's documentary America: Imagine the World Without Her is set to hit home release — heading to Blu-Ray/DVD on Oct. 28 and Digital HD Oct. 14.

The controversial documentary, written and directed by D'Souza and John Sullivan, became the No. 6-grossing political documentary of all time when released in theaters in June, according to the industry website Deadline.com. It has a box office total of more than $14 million.

D'Souza's 2012 documentary 2016: Obama's America is the second highest grossing political documentary of all time at over $33 million.

In an e-mail to USA TODAY, D'Souza says he was "proud" of the box office results of America.

"After 2016 some people thought we could not do it again and have another hit, but we did," says D'Souza. "With 2016 we had the fever of a presidential election year. That increases the size of the potential audience. So 2016 had a bigger box office and came in at No. 2, while America will close at No. 6. Both films have exceeded expectations both in their quality and their box office performance."

The documentary is based on D'Souza's best-selling book by the same name and produced by Academy Award-winning producer Gerald R. Molen (Schindler's List).

America was savaged by mainstream critics. It received an 8% critical score on RottenTomatoes.com for what the McClatchy-Tribune News Service called tapping the "Tea Party audience for more Obama-bashing cash."

But the film received an 88% positive audience score on the same website. The DVD cover art features a blurb from conservative pundit Rush Limbaugh, saying, "You'll be inspired."

The Blu-Ray and DVD will include over 40 minutes of additional footage including interviews with Ted Cruz, author Ward Churchill, former POW John Fer and conservative activist Star Parker.
