RCS&RDS announces 3G expansion, takeover of local cableco [TeleGeography CommsUpdate]

(TeleGeography CommsUpdate Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Romanian fixed broadband market leader, cableco and 3G mobile operator RCS&RDS has disclosed that it is focusing on expanding 3G coverage via the 900MHz spectrum it acquired in 2012 (which became valid in April 2014), enabling it to improve its 'DigiMobil' mobile services in urban areas, specifically in main cities at more than 500 cellular sites of the 1,600-plus sites in its UMTS network, the firm said in a website release.

Meanwhile, RCS&RDS has taken full ownership of local cable operator Canal 7, active in the city of Baia Mare and surrounding localities, according to Telecompaper citing local news source Ziarul Financiar. RCS&RDS acquired the entire customer base and related infrastructure of Canal 7. Prior to the move, RCS&RDS owned 51% of the company, which was bought from local businessman Majoros Andrei Csaba for an unspecified price.
