CNT markets LTE on handsets at last; rivals' 4G negotiations stalled? [TeleGeography CommsUpdate]

(TeleGeography CommsUpdate Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) State-backed Ecuadorian full-service operator Corporacion Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (CNT) has started marketing 4G LTE mobile phone packages, around five months after the full commercial launch of its LTE mobile broadband network for data-only customers in March, following a soft-launch for selected post-paid data device users in Q4 2013. TeleSemana reports that the new 4G handset plans are priced from USD29.99 to USD99.99 per month depending on the service contract, and the cheapest plan includes 2,000MB, 100 minutes and unlimited text messages.

Meanwhile, regarding the prospects of CNT's private sector rivals Movistar and Claro in gaining LTE spectrum licences, BNamericas reports that although Ecuador's strategic sectors minister Rafael Poveda said he expects the government to sign 4G concessions with the foreign-backed duo in the coming weeks, the cellcos themselves have reportedly claimed that negotiations have ground to a halt due to excessive state demands.
