It was meant to be a story of Paradise found – an exotic holiday in Thailand, a beautiful local and true love.

For this Swedish man though, it has turned into a living hell.

According to the Bangkok Post, the former Swedish chef Lief Christer has lost everything after falling in love with a bar-hostess in Thailand and is now begging on the streets of Thailand.

Images of him sleeping on a footpath in Sukhumvit Soi 4 have gone viral and many internet users across the world have been moved by his story – some to irritation by the foolishness of his actions, others to empathy.

Christer had arrived in Thailand in May, selling everything he had in Sweden, with his life savings of more than one million baht (S$50,000) to settle down with the bar-girl he had fallen in love with.

The ‘girlfriend’ he met last year while visiting cheated him of everything, leaving him with only his passport and a few belongings.

The Post reports that the Swedish Embassy could not help because he had no other documents.

The Swede worked as a chef in his hometown and is separated from his wife, with whom he has two children, five years ago.

Christer had tried to earn money by working as a hired hand but is currently reduced to begging with a tin can when he cannot make ends meet.
