Sambalpur: Tension prevailed on VSS Medical College and Hospital campus at Burla on Tuesday following death of a 20-year-old woman due to alleged medical negligence. Hemalata Karmi of Godbhaga village in Bargarh district was admitted to the VSS for a surgery as she developed appendicitis. She died late on Monday.
Relatives of the deceased reached the hospital in the morning, alleged negligence by the treating doctors and launched a demonstration.
They also lodged a complaint with VSS superintendent L K Dash against two doctors, holding them responsible for the death. They also lodged an FIR at Burla police station. Later, police registered a case.
Police sources said the deceased was admitted to the hospital a few days ago. A doctor conducted the surgery on Monday by giving anaesthesia, but she did not regain her senses till evening and died in the night. "It was an unfortunate incident. She died because she did not recover from the effect of anaesthesia. Such thing hardly happens. Doctors tried to save her, but she died at 3 am," surgery professor B M Mishra said.
The superintendent assured the deceased's family to probe the incident. He said action would be initiated against the treating doctor if the allegation is found to be true.
"We have started investigation basing on complaint of the woman's father Judhistir Karmi," said IIC of Burla police station Tofan Bagh.
