PUNE: The Pune crime branch on Monday arrested four persons for their alleged involvement in the murder of Zakir Shaikh (30), a criminal on police records. Shaikh was found murdered in Vadgaonsheri on Saturday.
The police said the suspects are: Sumit Satish Gaikwad (22) of Bopkhel, Datta Prakash Pawar (21) and Ramanand Premchand Sahani (20), both of Vadgaonsheri, and Zuber Iqbal Shaikh (22), a resident of Kharadi.
The crime branch (unit-V) and the property cell nabbed the suspects in a joint operation. Investigations have revealed that the suspects killed Shaikh over previous enmity and a dispute over sharing of booty.
Shaikh's body was found near the Mula-Mutha river, opposite Kumar Primavera housing society. He had received several blows on his body, the police said.
Mahadev Waghmode, assistant inspector of the crime branch (unit-V), said while investigating the case, the police received a tip-off about a suspect. "We laid a trap and nabbed Gaikwad from Bopkhel," he added.
Waghmode said during sustained interrogation, Gaikwad admitted to his involvement in the murder and also revealed the names of other suspects. Shaikh and Gaikwad were involved in pickpocketing and burglaries in the city. "Gaikwad had recently entered into a brawl with Shaikh over sharing of a booty. The duo also had some previous enmity," he added.
He said that on Friday night, Gaikwad called Shaikh for a party in the Vadgaonsheri area. Gaikwad's three other accomplices were also with them. "Gaikwad forced Shaikh to drink liquor. He, then, hacked Shaikh to death with a chopper and dumped his body near the river," Waghmode added.
