Even as Mumbaikars across homes prepare to welcome their favourite deity this year, the Mumbai police will be implementing a seven fold programme to ensure that only the celebrations makes the headlines. The Mumbai police, in a road map for the 10 days starting with Ganesh Chaturti on August 29, have instructed the men in uniform to focus on six priorities identified to prevent the city from falling prey to any untoward incident.

The Mumbai police resoluteness not to let crime in the city mar its celebratory spirit was evidenced during a press conference held by the joint commissioner of police (law and order) Dhananjay Kamlakar and joint commisioner of oolice (traffic) Dr B K Upadhyay on Tuesday. Mumbai police, taking cue from the problems they faced last year, have improved upon their strategy and zeroed down six main areas which need special attention during Ganesh Chaturti.

1) Tackilng Terror: Terror has been a prime concern for the Mumbai police during all the major festivals. Even this time around the Mumbai police are not leaving any stone unturned to ensure that no terror attacks take place in the city.

Measures- The police have already instructed their Anti Terror Cell (ATC) created at the police station level to carry out checks for any suspicious movement in their jurisdiction. The ATC will be collecting and verifying details of SIM card registration as terrorist are known to use SIM card registered on fake addresses and identity. A team of policemen will be checking the registration documents of rented houses in Mumbai in their respective jurisdiction to ascertain that no one is found to be living in Mumbai without valid papers. There would be checks that would be conducted at all the hotels and lodges across Mumbai ensuring that the rules set down by the police are complied with. A huge nakabandi drive would be initiated in the city for the 10 days of festival.

2) Anti-eve teasing squad: Women safety has been given prime importance by the Mumbai police in their plan for the Ganesh festival. Mumbai police taking cue from past instances where at big Mandal, women devotees faces lot of problem have ensure that this time no such complaints come forward.

Measures- The Mumbai police in their plan for a peaceful Ganesh Chaturti has created an Anti Eve Teasing squad will be deployed at all the major Mandals in the city. The only job to the policemen from the squad who would be keeping a vigil at the mandals is to ensure that no eve teasing is reported. Mumbai police have instructed its men to take immediate action if any such case is reported at any place in Mumbai. " We have created Anti eve teasing squad that will ensure that no woman faces any problem. Women safety is our responsibility and Mumbai police has taken all the measures to avoid such incidents and we have already registered 25 cases in this regards", said Jt CP (L and O) Dhananjay Kamlakar.

3) Communal harmony: As the Maharashtra assembly elections are around the corner, Mumbai police believes that some anti social elements might create communal tension with the help of the social media. Mumbai police's cyber crime wing has already been put on job to monitor and track social media and curb any anti social post being posted on websites and other social media.

Measures- Senior officials from Mumbai police have conducted various rounds of meetings with the members of the Mohalla committee across city and have sought their help to tackle communal problem if they crop up during the festival. "All the Mohalla committee has been taking into confidence and have been told to appeal for calm among their community during the 10 day festival. They have been told to report to Mumbai police if any such communal flaring message or picture is posted on the social networking platform. We have also asked the cyber cell of Mumbai police to keep a close eye on the cyber space", said Jt Cp (L and O) Dhananjay Kamlakar.

4) Eye on chain snatchers: The Mumbai police commissioner Rakesh Maria, had earlier told his men to curb the menace of chain snatching incidents that has been on rise in the city. The Mumbai police during this festival season will giving importance to chain snatching cases across the city.

Measures- The policemen deployed at the Mandals and at bandobast duty will keep a watch for chain snatchers in their area. During the festivals many devotees wear gold ornaments and this proves to be the best time for the chain snatchers to carry out crime. The police have already started issuing preventive notices to all the known criminals on record. " We have already served preventive notices to 1283 people across Mumbai", said Jt CP (L and O) Dhananjay Kamlakar.

5) Crowd management: One of the major problem faced by the Mumbai police during Ganesh festival is to control the crowd that comes at various Pandals to seeks the blessings of the god. This year too police will be working in tandem with other authorities as well as the mandal's to ensure that crowd management is done properly.

Measures- The Mumbai police will ensure that the crowd does not gather at one place for too long and the devotees keep on moving. The police will also be using barricades in huge numbers to divide the crowd in various group so that large number of people don't assemble at one place.

6) Disaster management: The Mumbai police claim to be well prepared for any disaster if reported from any part of the city. The policemen on duty will be the first to respond with additional force and other agencies to follow.

Measures- The Mumbai police will be working closely with the BMC incase if any disaster is reported. The police will also be appealing to people not to believe on rumours and maintain calm at any crowded places.

Do's and Don't
Apart from the six measures the Mumbai police will be distributing pamplets and put up a hoarding making citizen aware of do's and don't during the Ganesh festival. Mumbai police has also made a video advertising explaining precautions to be taken and will telecast on channels and local cable networks. "I can assure the citizen of Mumbai that the police is well prepared for the Ganesh festival and police will do its best to ensure that the festival goes off smoothly", said Jt CP (L and O) Dhananjay Kamlakar. The Mumbai police is also contemplating to use unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to for crowd monitoring during the festival and have requested the Mandals to install CCTV near their Pandals to monitor the crowd.
