ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- In adding Jordan Palmer to their quarterback mix, the Buffalo Bills have effectively added another coach to their meeting room.

Palmer worked this offseason as a tutor for Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles, prepping him for the draft. He also has experience as a counselor for Trent Dilfer's "Elite 11" quarterback camp.

While he is pushing to learn the playbook himself, Palmer believes he has insight that could benefit second-year Bills quarterback EJ Manuel.

"I'm here to compete and here to serve, and help him in any way that I can," Palmer said.

The two met three years ago when Manuel, then a junior at Florida State, also worked as an "Elite 11" counselor.

"It's going to be great," Manuel said. "Even today after practice he brought up a couple drills we could do, some stuff I've never done and stuff I've never seen before that I thought was pretty cool."

The Bills tried to bolster their coaching around Manuel this offseason by hiring Todd Downing, who coached Manuel in the 2013 Senior Bowl. Manuel also has worked with personal coaches Steve Calhoun and Ken Mastrole, but doesn't see Palmer's potential voice as one too many.

"Not really," Manuel said. "My quarterback coach is Todd Downing. He's the main person I talk to, who I listen to, as far as what I need to do to get better, critiquing, all that kind of stuff. It doesn't really get too cluttered."

Head coach Doug Marrone, however, said Palmer's coaching experience wasn't a significant factor in his signing.

"At least for me, I didn't know about that until after we claimed him. I didn't know EJ and him had worked together. I didn't know that he was helping those guys at the 'Elite 11,'" Marrone said. "I didn't know that until after I fact. I thought that was pretty good."
