A cell will be set up at the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University from Wednesday to facilitate the admission of the students of DD Medical College into paramedical courses and for their relocation to other universities.
This emerged at the end of a six-hour meeting between students and parents and State Health minister C. Vijaya Baskar, Higher Education minister P. Palaniappan as well as senior officials at the Secretariat on Tuesday.
Students were offered a range of options – to take up paramedical courses at various State universities including University of Madras, Bharathiar University and Annamalai University.
Students of the 2011-12 and 2012-13 batches of the college have been staging protests for several days, demanding that the government either take over their college, or admit them at government medical colleges. There are a total of 216 students in both batches.
“An Act to take action against erring colleges is under consideration. However, that will not provide any relief to these students. This is a complex procedure, and even were the college to be taken over, the seat matrix would be decided only by merit and the rule of reservation as per Medical Council of India norms,” a source said.
