The Jawaharlal Nehru Auto Nagar Industrial Estate (Auto Nagar) here will have a lush green cover soon as a part of the Industrial Environmental Improvement Drive (IEID) taken up by the A.P. Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) in partnership with Germany-based GIZ, a leading provider of sustainable development solutions. Auto Nagar, which houses nearly 2,000 small and medium enterprises, is one of the largest industrial estates/parks in the country.
Poor ambienceBut, it has a poor ambience, thanks to absence of greenery and bad road conditions. As a result, those who pass through this ‘concrete jungle’ are facing the ill-effects of pollution.
To give such industrial estates/parks a green look and control pollution, the APIIC has tied up with GIZ, which offers technical assistance in raising plantations, solid waste management, maintaining storm water drains and construction and upkeep of common effluent treatment plants (CETP) wherever required.
“The IEID project, which will be initially confined to raising ‘avenue plantations’ at a cost of nearly Rs 5 lakh, is currently in the tendering stage, and things will start taking shape in a few months,” APIIC Zonal Manager M. Murali Mohan said.
Auto Nagar is one of the 58 industrial parks in the eight zones of the APIIC selected for IEID, and works have already commenced in some of them.
The objective of the partnership between APIIC’s and GIZ is to make industrial parks environment-friendly while spreading awareness about the importance of keeping them green.
The Kondapalli Industrial Estate (KIE) is also among the projects chosen for IEID. GIZ has offered to lend expertise in the treatment of solid waste in the two industrial estates (Auto Nagar and KIE) where a substantial quantity of effluents is discharged everyday.
A sewage treatment plant exists at Auto Nagar, which was built under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.
Cleaning of roads in some industrial estates was entrusted to DWCRA groups and it is going on well.
