A gang of five persons allegedly raped a woman, who had come from Mahabubnagar district to the city to find work, in the early hours of Tuesday at Medipally after threatening her husband and brother.

The victim in her early 20s, who got married three months ago, was brought to the city by a labour contractor, Srinivas, along with her husband, brother and four others the previous day. They were accommodated in a house at Uppal. Another contractor, Balaswamy, hired them and sent them to the work site in a bus after midnight.

The woman and her two family members started for the work place around 1.30 a.m. in an auto-rickshaw. “On reaching a secluded place after Narapally, the gang intercepted us questioning my husband where he was taking me at midnight,” the woman told the police.

The gang members beat up the auto-rickshaw driver, who ran away from there. “They then made the trio sit in the auto and after travelling some distance, they took the woman into bushes and raped her, threatening to kill her husband and brother if they raised an alarm,” Medipally Inspector Ravi Kiran Reddy said.

Balaswamy, who too was going to the work place in a bus, got off on seeing the woman along with her family members on the roadside. He immediately called the police who rushed to the spot and shifted the woman to a hospital.

A massive hunt was launched in and around Medipally for the rapists. By evening, the police picked up one of the culprits from the locality and based on his confession, more police teams were sent out to catch the remaining persons.
