President wants Indian institues to improve global ranking
President Mukherjee said that in the list of top 200 universities prepared by grading organisations, not a single Indian institute, such as the IITs, NITs or universities, find a place.
President Pranab Mukherjee is upset with the fact that no Indian higher education institute figures in the list of the world's top 200 list.
On the inaugural ceremony of the country's first Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST) in Shibpur near Kolkata on Sunday, Mukherjee said that despite 720 universities, 37,000 degree colleges and 11,000 polytechnic institutes, it was saddening that the standards of Indian higher education institutes compared to international ones was low, said a newspaper report.
He said in the list of top 200 universities prepared by grading organisations, not a single Indian institute finds a place.
The President asked for increment in the cooperation between the country's higher education institutes. He also hoped that the undergraduate education would be integrated at IIEST with postgraduation and research in engineering and science.
Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court Manjula Chellur, Chairman of the board of governors at IIT-Kanpur M. Anandakrishnan, Rajya Sabha MP Tarun Vijay, West Bengal Higher Education Minister Partha Chatterjee and Jangipur MP Abhijeet Mukherjee were present at the event.
As for now, only integrated post graduate courses will be offered by IIEST.
