GENVA, Aug 26 (KUNA) -- Vice President of International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Chistine Beerli thanked Kuwait's parliamentary delegation, led by Speaker Marzouq Al-Ghanim, for their country's continuious support to the ICRC as one of the organization's biggest donors.
Beerli said in a statement to KUNA that this cooperation was extremely useful in alleviating the suffering of people.
The ICRC greatly values its relationship with Kuwait, and looks forward to increased cooperation on issues of mutual concern.
She assured that the ICRC has been extremely vocal to highlight the civilians' suffering in the Gaza Strip as well as in the West Bank.
"The organization has stepped up its bilateral and confidential dialogue with all the concerned parties to discuss all the issues related to international humanitarian law", she explained.
With regard to the request by the State of Palestine, addressed to the Swiss Government as the depository of the 1949 Geneva Conventions, to convene a meeting of High Contracting Parties, Beerli explained that "it is the role of Switzerland to conduct consultations with High Contracting Parties. In general terms, the ICRC welcomes any diplomatic process undertaken by High Contracting Parties driven by genuine humanitarian interest and with the aim to enhance respect for the International humanitarian law (IHL) all parties." The ICRC believes that a sustainable solution of the crisis is only possible through meaningful political effort, she added.
Beerli said that the ICRC continues to work for the missing persons since the Iraq-Kuwait War and the Iran-Iraq War. At present, the ICRC is doing all it can to help the victims of violence in the north as well as elsewhere in the country. (pickup previous) ta.gta
