On the beauty front it was a showcase of impactful simplicity that dominated the five days at Lakmé Fashion Week's (LFW) winter/festive 2014 shows in Mumbai this weekend. Bare lips or deep bordeaux, smooth glossy hair or retro waves and bright and shiny versus dewy eyes, gives you lots of runway fresh options that make a statement without speaking too loud.

Hair: Retro or minimalist

Retro and minimalistic were the two themes that dominated hairstyles at LFW. Designers like Anju Modi and Masaba went for the classic bun; Modi's was inspired by the old world charm and rich heritage that comes with a wedding ceremony (a low bun embellished with jewellery), while Masaba's was a simpler version sans adornments, with a bouffant adding volume to the bun.

"The idea is not to be old fashioned because we are using heritage jewellery, it is to carry the old values," Modi tells Vogue.

Amit Aggarwal's show saw simple slicked back hair, untied and glossed, with extended colourful ears acting as accessories. Varun Bahl went for romantic, retro waves on a short crop for his showstopper Priyanka Chopra and GenNext designer Anuj Bhutani took inspiration from '60s English subculture with stylish high updos.

Eyes: Glitter spectrum

Glitter is a keyword for eyes this winter—metallic shadows, electric shades and nude shimmer were seen on the eyes, with designers playing on the levels of drama. Masaba's models had eyes shining right from the lids till above the brows in shimmery gold and silver, Varun Bahl's models wore shiny ocean blue eyeshadow blended along the lids, while Anita Dongre kept it more low key with a touch of creamy shimmer on the insides of the eyes that gave the model an overall glow.

Lips: Pink or wine

Designers like Sidharth Sinha, Sania Maskatiya, Sonaakshi Raaj, Priyadarshini Rao and Manish Malhotra played with variations of the nude spectrum, ranging from matte creams to soft pinks. These were juxtaposed with deep, intense bordeaux and wine lips on dewy faces at Vikram Phadnis and Armaan & Aiman.
