Trauma care centre on Expressway almost ready

The first trauma care centre is also spread across an eight-acre plot at Ozarde, near the Talegaon toll booth.

The first trauma care centre and helipad to provide quick medical aid to accident victims on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway is set to be operational soon, with the construction being complete and the state agency in charge looking for firms to operate it.

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has also invited pre-qualification bids for a second trauma care centre and a helipad on the 95-km Mumbai-Pune Expressway, which is notorious for a high number of accidents.

“The first medical facility is more towards the Pune side of the expressway. We are looking for companies to construct the second trauma care centre on a build, operate and transfer basis now on the Mumbai side between Bhatan and Khalapur,” said a senior MSRDC official who did not wish to be named.

The MSRDC is looking for companies who have a minimum of eight acres on the stretch and have experience in operating a similar facility earlier.

Festive offer

The MSRDC is looking for companies experienced in managing hospitals and trauma care centres to operate the Ozarde trauma care centre, providing treatment for victims, including intensive care unit services, medical equipment and staff.

S M Ramchandani, joint managing director, MSRDC, said, “We have written to the state health department to provide assistance in operating the trauma care centre and providing paramedics, doctors, staff and guide us with regards to the required medical equipment.
We hope to start operations of the trauma care centre as soon as possible.”

The corporation is also in talks with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation for clearance to start operations of the helipad.

Commuters injured in accidents can use the air ambulance service of any hospital, paying their charges, via the heliport with free landing and take-off facilities. For the trauma care centre, the MSRDC intends to provide services free of charge.

To recover the cost of free treatment given to accident victims of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, the MSRDC has decided to allow the operator of the trauma care centre to use the facility for academic purposes or any other medicine-related purpose.

Both the trauma care centres will be of a level IV grade. The facility will be equipped to conduct initial evaluation, stabilise accident victims and provide diagnostic services. A level IV trauma care centre can provide surgical and critical care services as well.
