FORT HOOD, Texas — Soldiers with 215th Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division recently volunteered with the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors at Fort Hood, Texas.
A non-profit organization that operates within the Combined Federal Campaign program, TAPS funds activities to help families cope with the loss of a loved one. From young toddlers to teenagers, the program offers military families a way to heal.
The 215th BSB volunteers – also called mentors – who visited the TAPS program were assigned a teenager or child to participate in games and arts and crafts together. With a goal of providing words of encouragement, they listened as families shared memories about times spent with their lost loved ones.
Spc. Mirea Damaris, a health care specialist in Medical Company C, 215th BSB, assisted two young girls, who both lost their uncle in an accident.
As the girls became better acquainted, Damaris guided them through a full day of activities.
The groups played games, visited the 1st Cavalry Division Museum, and participated in group conversations.
“These children are so strong and braver than I imagined,” said Mirea. “This was an amazing experience to remember for a lifetime.”
The volunteers came together to help out and make the visit a special day for everyone.
“This program has opened my eyes in a way that leaves me speechless,” said Sgt. Frankie Mejias, a Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 215th BSB human resources specialist. “I am definitely signing up every year for camps they have in the future.”
