Residents of Indira Nagar at Kandhal on the outskirts of the town hoisted black flags atop their houses on Sunday.

According to the police, it was part of a series of demonstrations they have planned, to register their protest against the move of the municipality to set up a biomethanation plant in the area.

The contention of the organisers was that the stench emanating from the plant will subject the residents to considerable inconvenience.

They wanted the municipality to drop the proposal. However sources in the civic administration told The Hindu that the proposal has been approved by the municipal council and a sum of Rs.90 lakh has been earmarked under the Integrated Urban Development Mission.

Rs.24 lakh has also been set aside by the municipality. The foundation for the bio-methanation plant has been laid by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. Earth work was now in progress.
