Sunday morning found residents and shop keepers of Bazaar Street in Mylapore shocked when branches of a large tree were completely chopped off.

K.V.P. Deepakraj, an advocate, said it was cut at night and the branches were dumped in a garbage bin in the morning. “A crow’s nest with the birds was also thrown into the bin,” he said. The street has a lot of trees that are around seven to eight years old, said R. Pon Sekar, who runs a shop selling old doors and windows. “We are not sure who cut the branches. This has been done in a very brutal manner. Some people in the area wanted the tree to be removed as it was obstructing a name board of a nearby temple. But many others were not for it as it provided shade,” he said.

Sources at the Chennai Corporation said that trees on streets cannot be trimmed or cut by individuals. “If someone has a problem, they can contact the local corporation ward office,” said an official.
