UIET directs 13 victims of cheating to pay fees
KANPUR: The fate of 13 BTech students of University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), hangs in balance as they had been deprived of Rs 50,000 each by a gang of cheats. UIET authorities now want them to submit Rs 50,000 for taking admission in next year’s course of BTech. Many of these students are from poor families. They had expressed helplessness in submitting the fees.
UIET director Renu Jain said that during investigation it was learnt that 13 students had been duped of Rs 50,000.
But for taking admission next year, they are required to submit fees.
"The students have made mistake by relying on colleagues for depositing the fees. The course fees had to be submitted with the bank," Jain said. They are under stress and unable to justify their act before the UIET authorities. The students paid fees to colleagues, who were operating a gang, instead of depositing it in Bank of Baroda branch on the University campus. UIET had completed the admission process and started classes. "We are helpless. We can't do anything for these students. Procedure has to be followed. It is shocking how so many students got trapped in the net of fraudsters," a teacher said.
The incident came to light on August 4, when the students who had been cheated, complained against a ow colleague and he was arrested. An FIR was lodged against the accused with Kalyanpur police.
The students involved in the racket had lured the colleagues by promising a discount of Rs 3,000 in the fees. The students had to deposit Rs 53,000 as fees but they handed over Rs 50,000. The gang members gave bank receipt of Rs 50,000 to such students with forged seal affixed on it.
The matter is being investigated.
