A day after the accident involving a bus and a Maruti Swift car in which five persons were killed, the crossing at the intersection of sectors 45/46/49 /50 was still enveloped in darkness on Sunday night, with no streetlights working.

An official from the nearby CRPF camp said the lights had been defunct for long. “The darkness and the low visibility at night has been the cause of many accidents,” he said.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic Administration) Pawan Kumar said, “We have sent many reminders to the municipal corporation for repairing the lights, but to no effect.”

SSP Sukhchain Singh Gill said they would once again write to the authorities concerned.

MC chief engineer Mukesh Anand could not be contacted despite many attempts.

Festive offer

CRPF constable K Kutty said, “We have also complained many times. I was posted here a month back and since then the lights have not been working. My colleagues tell me that the lights have been out of order for a few months.”

Members of an organisation, Luv-Kush Sewadal, held a hawan near the spot on Sunday morning and prayed for the victims. Ashwani Baghania, chairperson of the organisation, said, “On the main road, there are no lights at all. Residents have complained about it, poles have been installed, but there are no bulbs yet.’’
