DADA J P VASWANI

Spiritual head, Sadhu Vaswani Mission

BK S Iyengar was a yogi par excellence. His body appeared to be made of rubber and he could mould it as he liked. His guru (in the south) had charged him with the task of spreading yoga to the west. His faith in his guru was great and he was the first to carry the message of yoga to Europe.

They came to him in batches and called him ‘Guruji’. He believed that the true test of a civilisation was not the census, nor the size of its cities, but the kind of people it turned out.

Bharat is known primarily for its yoga, and not so much for its buildings or mountains. B K S Iyengar played a very important role in spreading awareness of yoga all over the globe. We should strive to do something constructive in life that will be remembered for generations to come, and Iyengar did just that by presenting a new aspect of yoga that helped people to accept it more easily. Most people areaware of yoga’s spiritual side, but Iyengar  revolutionised it by linking it to medical science, thus making it scientific. So, whether he was teaching dhyana, asana or pranayama, he presented every aspect of yoga in a scientific way, making it popular especially among the youth. He lived his life like a true yogi and trained numerous teachers to spread the message of yoga across the world.

Yoga originated with Patanjali to alleviate the sufferings of people. Guruji was the reincarnation of Patanjali. He gave hope and new lease of life to many people like me. I was bedridden for several years and it was through Iyengar Yoga that I recovered and was able to lead a healthy life. Iyengar Yoga helps in healing people and in removing their suffering.Guruji was a genius, philosopher and artist. It has been a great privilege for me to share his yogic experiences with students and watch them walk out of my yoga centre, happy, joyous, hopeful and healthy and supremely confident.Yoga is a way of life that helps get the body and mind in sync and embodies health, happiness and hope.

BK S Iyengar can easily be called one of the most celebrated yogis of the 20th century. The first thing that comes to mind when we think of him is form — he is  the inventor of what we today refer to as the ‘classical asana,’ perfect in shape, form and above all, alignment. He taught picture-perfect asanas, the attainment of which he so methodically devised and advocated that it became attractive, exciting and challenging for the west. This perfectness was not  merely cosmetic, but as his disciples discovered, was equally therapeutic, as well. What Ravi Shankar did for Indian music, Iyengar did for yoga.He was the master of modern, postural yoga.
