Time for change
With reference “What Ravi Shastri will never say” by A Srinivas (August 23), IPL has its pluses and minuses. The biggest plus is that it gives a real chance for making money to all those players who otherwise never get a chance to wear the Indian colours. At the same time it can corrupt young players. Had IPL improved our T20 standards, we would have won every edition of the World T20 cup, which is not the case. So the time has come for the BCCI to take corrective measures and think beyond money-making.

Unfit to teach
It was heart-rending to read that a second standard boy in a private school near Kumbakonam (in Tamil Nadu) was beaten up by his teacher resulting in surgery near his right eye. The challenge of a teacher is to make the motley crowded class listen to him/her. Needless to say, he/she must adopt sound teaching techniques. In this issue, the teacher had committed two serious mistakes: one, she failed to attract the student’s attention to her teaching, and second, she became petulant and beat the child. As a teacher, I feel that teachers who beat children are unfit for the profession.

Welcome the ban
The Kerala chief minister’s move to enforce a ban on liquor is welcome. The chief minister has rightly said that the benefits from the ban exceed the loss of revenue from liquor. Liquor plays devastating role in society; violence and rape are the concomitants of liquor consumption. If the crime rate comes down, the compensation payable by the Government in case of death and injuries also comes down. Women in particular will be very happy. Money spent on liquor can be usefully spent on household needs of the family. The ban will cleanse society as a whole. Other States also should emulate the example of Kerala.
