The flood situation in Dhemaji and Lakhimpur districts remained grim on Saturday as the Subansiri river in neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh was in spate. Over 2 lakh people of 564 villages in the two northern Assam districts were affected by the deluge.
Dhemaji is the worst-hit district in the ongoing spate of floods in the state where about 1.4 lakh people were affected. The district administration has opened several relief camps in all four revenue circles, even as many villagers are taking shelter on embankments or other higher grounds.
Dhemaji district disaster management officials said 21,640 people of 66 villages in Dhemaji revenue circle, 85,200 people of 155 villages in Sisiborgaon revenue circle, 25,318 people of 144 villages in Jonai revenue circle and 8,014 people of 20 villages in Gogamukh revenue circle in the district were affected by floods.

Floodwaters have also submerged about 39,000 hectares of crop lands in the Dhemaji district.
Deputy commissioner (Lakhimpur) Gaurav Bothra said, “Water levels of the Ranganadi and Subansiri rivers were showing a receding trend on Saturday afternoon and we hope the situation would improve in the next few hours.”
He added, “According to the report that we have received from district disaster management cell, over 80,000 people of 179 villages in the district have been affected by floods so far.”
The Brahmaputra was also flowing above the danger level in Jorhat, Goalpara and Dhubri. The current wave of floods has severely affected 14 districts in the state.
