The literary team of Spandan, Jipmer’s annual inter-college extravaganza, opened its doors to the public in a first-of-its-kind general knowledge Open Quiz competition on Saturday.
A total of 120 teams, including those from schools and colleges, participated in the preliminary round. The final round saw eight teams battling for the top honours. “We were pleasantly surprised over the response. We had thought of it as a dry run for next year. Hopefully, our juniors will continue it for the next edition of Spandan,” said Sripartha Y. of the organising team.
The maximum number of hands went up when the audience was asked to identify the visual of sculptures at the Google headquarters. Quizmaster Sudarshan commended the performance of the school students, with the team from St. Patrick Higher Secondary School winning the Best School award in the preliminary round. Apart from the interesting questions, the teams also had interesting names like ‘Furiously curious’ and ‘664-neighbours of the beast.’ A team from Chennai, ‘Madras to Pondicherry’ comprising of Prashanth, Siddharth and Srinath, won the Open Quiz competition.
The fine arts competition, Motif, concluded with Rangoli and Mehendi. In the short film competition, La Fete Du Cinema, ‘Whatsapp Kadhal’ and ‘The Game’ won the best film award. The final day of Spandan also saw teams take the stage for Euphony, the Western acoustics competition, with numbers from Eric Clapton. On the sports side, girls from the Vellore Institute of Technology and boys from the Bangalore Medical College won the first prize in badminton. VIT also won the top spot in throwball. In table tennis, girls from Sri Manakula Vinayagar Engineering College took the top honours while boys from the Jipmer B team won the first prize. Spandan 2014 concluded on Saturday.
