BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take steps to rebuild the Ram Temple in Ayodhya by 2016 in order to fulfill the party's commitment to voters.

In a letter sent to Modi, Swamy suggested that a former Chief Justice of India like S H Kapadia should be appointed as an executor to liaise with a designated union minister like Gen V K Singh to take up the construction of the temple. This designated minister could issue a notice to the "hereditary supervisor" of Babri Masjid to withdraw his claim to the Ram Janmabhoomi site in Ayodhya, Swamy said in the letter. The hereditary supervisor could be offered an alternative site across the Saryu river for building a mosque at public expense.

Swamy further suggested that the government should organize a meeting of Islamic clerics from India and abroad and seek their endorsement for the venture. If such an endorsement is not forthcoming, the government should move an enabling bill in parliament and get it passed.

He also said a "Ram Temple rebuilding committee" should be formed on the lines of the "Somnath temple model". The Babri Masjid was pulled down by zealots in 1992, triggering riots in several parts of India.
