Singapore-based artist Alpana Ahuja’s works are on display at a month-long exhibition — Ganapati to Gajah — showcased at The Metropolitan Hotel and Spa in association with Art Spice.
The art exhibition, inaugurated by Minister for Women and Child Welfare Maneka Gandhi, is being organised to spread the message for the need to save the elephant.
Wildlife SOS, an NGO involved in elephant conservation, brought Alpana and rescued elephant Phoolkali together to collaborate on and produce artwork. Alpana’s collaboration with Phoolkali took place at the Wildlife SOS Elephant Conservation and Care Centre, a chain-free facility for elephants. Together, they created a series of unique images on canvas.
The organisers are using the festival of Ganesh Puja to spread awareness and draw attention to the state of elephants in the country.
It is ironic that on the one hand the country prays to Ganpati or the remover of all obstacles, and on the other the gajah faces innumerable obstacles in the way of being able to roam free in the jungles.
A fund-raiser was organised at the exhibition and the proceeds from the sale will go towards elephant conservation. The exhibition is open for public viewing till September 19.
