Sunderland opened their campaign with a hard fought draw against West Brom at the Hawthorns last weekend and manager Gus Poyet will be looking for a great home opener against Manchester United at the Stadium of Light.

Lee Cattermole and Sebastian Larsson made the most of their opportunities last week and the two midfielders will be looking to push their side on once again this week as Manchester United come to town.

Summer addition Billy Jones and last season signing Emanuele Giaccherini both are ruled out through injury while Santiago Vergini remains a doubt for the Black Cats.

United manager Louis Van Gaal on the other hand has a much deeper pit of injuries with Michael Carrick, Luke Shaw, Danny Welbeck, and Marouane Fellaini all ruled out while Robin Van Persie, Jonny Evans, Antonio Valencia and Jesse Lingard are all doubts for the weekend.

New addition Marcos Rojo could be available but he is expected to be left out until next week with a reshuffled first team with some of several new faces likely to feature for the first time this season.

Projected Lineups

Sunderland XI: Mannone: Brown, Roberge, O'Shea, Aanholt; Cattermole; Johnson, Larsson, Cattermole, Rodwell; Fletcher.

Manchester United XI: De Gea: Jones, Smalling, Blackett; Januzaj, Fletcher, Herrera, Young; Mata; Rooney, Persie.
