Phivolcs: 7 volcanic quakes at Taal; 1 rockfall at Mayon in last 24 hours

At least seven volcanic quakes were recorded at Taal Volcano in Batangas while one rockfall was observed at Mayon Volcano in Albay in the last 24 hours, state volcanologists said Sunday.

In Taal, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology also noted an increase in water temperature at the east part of the main crater lake last Aug. 21.

But Phivolcs said Alert Level 1 remains over Taal Volcano, meaning a hazardous eruption is still not imminent.

Still, it reminded the public the main crater remains "strictly off-limits" because "sudden steam explosions may occur and high concentrations of toxic gases may accumulate."

It added the northern portion of the Main Crater rim, in the vicinity of Daang Kastila Trail, may also become dangerous when steam emission along existing fissures suddenly increases.

Phivolcs added the entire volcano island is a permanent danger zone and not for permanent settlement.

Mayon

Meanwhile, Phivolcs recorded one rockfall at Mayon along with moderate emission of white steam plumes that drifted northeast.

It said other indicators show Mayon may have been experiencing "increased volcanic gas emission and slight but persistent swelling due to the intrusion of magma beneath."

Mayon Volcano’s alert status was raised to Alert Level 2, meaning magma has most likely intruded at depth and that there could be a larger eruption.

Phivolcs reminded the public to be vigilant and not to enter the 6-km radius permanent danger zone "to minimize risks from sudden explosions, rock fall and landslides." — Joel Locsin /LBG, GMA News
