300 applicants benefit from passport mela

Chennai: All steps are on to clear the pending passport applications and with the resumption of passport booklet supply from India Security Press, Nashik, 26,908 passports have been printed and about 17,600 despatched to applicants in the last one week, regional passport officer Senthil Pandian said here on Saturday.
Addressing a public grievance day at Saligramam passport seva kendra, Mr Pandian said around 42,000 applications in the pending list would soon be approved if the applicants submit the required documents.
Passport office sources said a special passport mela was also conducted last month to meet the growing demand and to clear the backlog. More than 300 applicants visited the PSKs at Saligramam, Tambaram and Aminjikarai and benefited during the grievance day meet.
While new applications weren’t considered, the grievance meet looked into applications put on hold during a period of six months from January to June 2014 for want of additional documents or clarification, sources added.
