Ad man Prasoon Joshi on how breaking a leg helped him reconnect with his sister.

This is a rare, old picture from the early 90s when I had just begun my career in advertising. I was working at Ogilvy & Mather in Delhi. It was also a time when I had almost lost touch with my family in Lucknow.

I met with a motorcycle accident, broke my ankle and was forced to go back home. The fracture ended up giving me a chance for some uninterrupted time with family.

What makes this picture memorable is the fact that the time spent at home helped me reconnect with my sister.

When I returned, I realised how I was caught up with my new life in Delhi and that the bond with my sister had weakened over the years. I was close to her and we shared a lot during our formative years. This forced rest gave me an opportunity to bring her up to speed about my life and learn what she had been up to.

We were both interested in singing and would rehearse and record our songs together. Today, she teaches German at Delhi Public School but I still believe she’s a fine classical singer, too.

This photograph was clicked by our cook using a manual camera I owned at the time. We had to teach him how to do it and I remember that after four attempts, he finally managed to capture this one.

At the time, my father was employed as an education director and this photograph was clicked in Nishad Ganj where the government quarters were located. When I left home to pursue my MBA from IMT, Ghaziabad, he was posted in Meerut and later, got transferred to Lucknow. He never understood my work and when I would try to explain, talking about strategy and media planning, he would brush it off saying, “Matlab beta, tum naare hi likhte ho, na?” - As told to Kunal Guha
