Jaheel Hyde of Jamaica has credited staying cool on a hot Nanjing evening for his gold-medal performance in the men's 110m hurdles at the 2nd Youth Olympic Games on Saturday.

Hyde recorded a personal best of 12.96 seconds to finish ahead of Henrik Hannermann of Germany and Kim Gyeongtae of South Korea.

"I knew that once I followed my coach's instructions I wouldn't lose out in this race," he said.

"It was just focusing for me, I tried to keep a cool face. I was a bit nervous but that was just me, that's racing. My aim was to come out there and get the gold medal for my country. The gold medal means the world to me. It's the biggest gold medal that an athlete in my age group could ask for. I'm a World Youth champion and a Youth Olympic champion and a World Junior champion, what more could I ask for?"

Silver medallist Hannemann said he knew before the race the best he could hope for was second.

"My race was perfect. It was really a perfect race I had. I had a good start and I was clear over the hurdles, I touched no hurdle. It was a perfect race," he said.

"There was no way to catch the Jamaican. Last year, I raced against him and he was three-four metres in front of me as well."

And Kim said he too was pleased with his result.

"I'm very pleased that I got to compete with athletes from other countries. I'm happy with my result here."

Angelica Moser of Switzerland won the gold medal in the women's pole vault with a personal best of 4.36m. Second was Robeilys Peinado of Benin and Leda Kroselj of Slovenia was third. Endit
