The camera pans over the magnificent Palm Islands in Dubai. Dazzling fireworks and striking architecture grab our attention. Then, one by one, director Farah Khan’s ‘losers’ are revealed. Some sizzling pole dance moves by Deepika Padukone, some action sequences from SRK… there’s a lot packed into the 3.12-minute trailer of Red Chillies Entertainment’s mammoth Diwali release Happy New Year . But what stands out is the 'Indiawaale' song.

And it’s this theme that inspired celeb designer Manish Malhotra to create a special collection for the film's trailer launch in Mumbai. At a show in which the film’s cast and director walked the ramp, Manish showed off the appeal of Indian hand-woven silks, intricate embroidery and classic silhouettes.

Shah Rukh Khan, who leads the pack of ‘losers’ in this heist drama that has Farah Khan’s signature ingredients, wore a deep-toned sherwani. The other men in the cast — Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood, Vivaan Shah, Bomman Irani and Jackie Shroff — looked dapper in classic bandhgalas, sherwanis, Jodhpuri pants and classic suits.

Manish stuck to a deep blue-and-burgundy palette for his formal line. Highlights came in the form of his signature ivory threadwork.

Deepika Padukone, for whom Manish has done the styling in the film, wore a coral-coloured sari subtly embellished with sequins and mirrors. Soft curls framed her face accentuating the feminine look.

Manish, who began his Bollywood career with the Sridevi-starrer Gumrah in 1993, is famous for Urmila Matondkar’s makeover in Rangeela , Kajol’s look in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai , Madhuri Dixit’s Spandex bodysuits in Dil Toh Pagal Hai and Kareena Kapoor’s T-shirt and salwar combo in Jab We Met .

For all the new trends, Manish still believes that the sari teamed with a charming blouse or sexy bustier is the most sensual attire. It explains why he still makes the stars caress monotone chiffon saris — on the ramp and on the big screen.
