Court rejects perjury charge against Paraskar

A Mumbai sessions court on Friday rejected the perjury application filed against Deputy Inspector of Police Mr. Sunil Paraskar, who was accused of rape by a city based model.

On July 24, a 26-year-old Gladrags model lodged a complaint accusing the officer of raping and molesting her between November 2013 and March 2014 when he was posted as the Additional Commissioner of Police (North Region) with the Mumbai police.

On August 8, Chitra Salunke, the victim's counsel had moved a perjury application claiming that Mr. Paraskar lied to the court while seeking interim relief from arrest on July 25.

In her application, Ms.Salunke alleged that Mr. Paraskar's lawyer Rizwan Merchant committed a perjury by seeking an interim relief on the ground that the victim was booked in a PITA case by Mr. Paraskar and therefore she has filed a rape case against him in vengeance. Ms. Salunke claimed that she was a complainant and not an accused in the said case referred by Mr. Merchant.

However, during the course of the argument, Mr. Merchant denied making any such oral submission and had defended the application claiming that he might have been misunderstood by the court.

Meanwhile on Friday, Ms. Salunke moved another application seeking cancellation of the anticipatory bail granted to Mr. Paraskar. Mr. Paraskar was granted anticipatory bail on August 12. An anticipatory bail grants immunity from arrest.
