Elephant calf continues baby boom at zoo

The healthy male calf was born to mother Anak at 6.24am last Tuesday weighing in at 70kg.

The calf, which is yet to be named, will join the rest of the herd — Bernhardine, Asha, Yasmin and her new calf which was born last month, and mum and Dad Anak and Upali in the Kaziranga Forest Trail.

Assistant director at Dublin Zoo, Paul O’Donoghue, said both births had been a huge achievement for the zoo.

“It is amazing for us to be able to announce the birth of two Asian elephants in the space of six weeks. The calf is doing well and is being watched carefully by his mum Anak and the rest of the herd. As a first-time mother, Anak has bonded very well with the calf, with the help of the family unit,” he said.

The Natural Confectionery Company will be announcing details of the naming competition for the new arrival on their Facebook page offering a family the chance to officially name the new elephant.

Meanwhile, there were smiles all around at Fota Wildlife Park in Cork when Clodagh, a two- month-old Giraffe calf, joined the rest of the herd for the first time in the African savannah having recovered from a broken leg sustained during birth.

Clodagh was born on June 22 to mum Aoife and dad Walder.

The third Rothschild giraffe to be born this year had sustained a broken leg during birth and had a cast put on for six weeks.

The team at Fota were helped by long-term park vets Gillabbey Veterinary clinic in getting Clodagh back to full health as a broken leg can be life threatening for a giraffe.

Lead warden at Fota Wildlife Park Aidan Rafferty said he was delighted to see the giraffe fighting fit.

“She has made a fantastic recovery having only been taken out of the cast over two weeks ago and it is great to see her so active today with the other giraffes.

“Mum Aoife has been doing a great job looking after her since day one,” he said.

The calf will now be able enjoy the open space of the savannah for the first time alongside two other calves Fada and Eadaoin who were born at the beginning of the year.
