SMS medical college's student polls cancelled
JAIPUR: Students' elections for the Sawai Man Singh medical college were postponed on Friday following a protest.
The elections were scheduled for August 23 but now it will be held on a date which will be announced later. An official involved in election process said, "The elections have been postponed and the new date is not confirmed."
The students on Friday protested at the SMS medical college after a notice was pasted declaring that a candidate was the winner for president's post unopposed.
The election officials had cancelled and found nomination of one of the two candidates for the post not valid, sources said.
A group of students protested against the cancellation move. They asked reasons for cancellation of the nomination after the last date of the withdrawal of the nomination papers.
The sources said election officials cancelled the nomination because they found the candidate ineligible as per the age criteria. The officials involved in election process sought the government's permission to postpone the elections due to "controversy on the age criteria".
There were only two candidates for president's posts but as nomination of one of the two candidates was cancelled (due to age criteria), only one candidate was eligible for the president's post. A group of students protested against the decision of cancellation. The students continued to protest for a long time raising slogans.
