Sport: Commonwealth Games success boost to Pacific Games

The success of Pacific athletes at the Commonwealth Games is having a flow-on effect for organisers of next year's Pacific Games in Port Moresby.

The Pacific won eight medals in Glasgow, all in weightlifting.

Papua New Guinea lifters Dika Toua and Steven Kari were among the three gold medallists from the region and Pacific Games CEO Peter Stewart says their success has helped to boost the interest in next year's event on home soil.

"The Commonwealth Games really gave us a kick-along because all of Papua New Guinea was watching. Our athletes performed exceptionally well, as did a number of other Pacific nations' athletes as well, Kiribati and Samoa - we had some fantastic performances - which bodes well for our Games because it means that we've got global quality athletes competing at the Pacific Games and the public understand and so we're the next event that's going to occur so everybody is getting pretty excited about that."

Peter Stewart says general preparations are tracking well 11 months out from the opening ceremony and says organisers expect another visit from the Pacific Games Council in November.
