LEGAL GURU

Senior advocate Rajeev Dhavan described his fraternal friend and former Cabinet minister Kapil Sibal as his “guru”.

Senior advocate Rajeev Dhavan described his fraternal friend and former Cabinet minister Kapil Sibal as his “guru” when the two counsel stood opposite each other to argue a case in the Supreme Court Friday. Dhavan said it was his pleasure to argue in front of Sibal, who he considered as “guru,” for the latter had helped him hone his legal skills and court crafts. While Sibal responded only with a smile, Justice T S Thakur quipped: “We don’t know who is whose guru but for us, both of you are our gurus.”

PRESIDENTIAL UNEASE

While  it has been all bonhomie and photo opportunities so far between President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rashtrapati Bhavan is uncomfortable over some recent media reports quoting unnamed government spokespersons that President completely agreed with the government’s move on Gopal Subramanium and Kamla Beniwal. While the president did give his assent in both cases, senior Rashtrapati Bhavan functionaries say he is bound by the Constitution to do so. Of course, they hasten to add he could have asked the government to review but didn’t do so as he was aware that had the government reiterated its stand, he would have had to give his assent.

AIR REJIG

Having recently been stripped of his charge as DD News chief and put on “compulsory wait” by the Modi government, senior Indian Information Officer S M Khan has now been posted as the chief of Registrar of Newspapers for India. Former All India Radio DG News Archana Datta, who had been earlier asked to look after Khan’s duties till further orders has now been given formal charge of Director General of DD News. RNI Chief Mohan Chandak, having been replaced by Khan, will now be the new Director General (News) at All India Radio.

THE OTHER SIDE

Keen to showcase the “intellectual” side of his personality to the new government, the head of an industry chamber has published a near 40-page magazine on his columns and quotes carried in newspapers. The glossy magazine that is available at events organised by the industry chamber lists out in detail the various contributory articles as well as quotes used in not only the English press, but also the regional media.
