Next month’s Incheon Asian Games may well be chief coach Wim Koevermans’ last outing with the national team. The Dutchman’s contract ends after the continental event and it is learnt that the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has run out of patience with the coach of two years.
India suffered a humiliating 2-0 defeat to Pakistan on Wednesday, a result that has attracted criticism from several quarters. And even though the team won the first match of the bilateral series, the performance was far from convincing. India were drawn in a tough group for the Asiad after they were placed in Group G with UAE and Jordan.
AIFF general secretary Kushal Das said they will take a decision on Koevermans’ future after the Asian Games. “The result is indeed disappointing but we will take a call on whether to extend his contract after the Asian Games,” Das said on Thursday.
The team reached pre-quarterfinals at the previous Asian Games four years ago but, in current form, it looks unlikely that India will be able to go beyond the group stage in Incheon.
While the performances at the AFC Challenge Cup qualifiers have been underwhelming under Koevermans, India’s regional supremacy too has suffered a setback with the national team losing to Nepal, Afghanistan and now Pakistan.
