More Bundaberg investment tipped to flow from gas pipeline
A Bundaberg councillor says a gas pipeline to the city's industrial area will help to attract more manufacturers to the region.
The Queensland Government will spend $11 million on the 25-kilometre gas line from west of the city through to the port.
Premier Campbell Newman says it will create 100 direct and 600 indirect jobs.
The council's economic development spokesman, Greg Barnes, says it is a significant investment.
"I think the lay person doesn't realise just how much importance people put on infrastructure when they look at relocating and establishing manufacturing plants," he said.
"If the infrastructure's not here, weather can be fine, the roads can be fine, that sort of stuff, but they need that infrastructure to make it work, they need it to be affordable infrastructure."
Cr Barnes says the pipeline will encourage investment.
"To get government to commit $11 million into this type of baseline infrastructure is absolutely huge," he said.
"I can tell you that over the years council has had many, many inquiries from various industries that are looking at relocating here and one of the major things that have stopped them from coming here is the absence of cheap, affordable gas."
