MADURAI: The department of plastic and reconstructive surgery in Government Rajaji Hospital here is all set to begin its golden jubilee celebrations from Friday at the Indian Medical Association hall near the hospital.
As part of the 50th year celebration, the department has been undergoing a facelift. The number of beds in the department has been increased by 30.
It has also decided to treat out-patients for six days in a week instead of three days. It will further be expanded by occupying ward no. 225, said professor Dr S Gnanasekaran of the department.
The plastic and reconstructive surgery department, which was started in 1964 with the initiatives of Sam C Bose, one of the pioneers in plastic surgery, had just 12 beds. Now the department has grown leaps and bounds. At present, it is the only government plastic surgery department to provide an array of treatments, including cleft lip, palatte surgery, critical burns injury, hypospandias and many congenital disorder correction and facio ortho correction for accident victims.
The alumni of the department include renowned cosmetic and reconstructive surgeons like Dr Mehboob Ali and Dr J Srinivasan, who is currently working in United Kingdom, said Sam C Bose.
As part of the celebrations, a national-level workshop to create awareness about the developments in the field of plastic surgery has been planned.
