Police in northern Alberta have laid a number of charges against a man, after officers tried to stop a suspect vehicle earlier in the week – and the suspect tried to flee, and left two RCMP officers injured in the process.

Grande Prairie RCMP said Mikkial Vaughn Cardinal, 28, from Smith, Alberta, is facing ten charges in relation to the August 19 incident.

RCMP said on that night, at about 9 p.m., officers tried to stop a vehicle that was reportedly driving erratically – officers also learned the suspect had threatened to shoot an officer.

A short time later, officers tried to contain the suspect at a gas station at Mission Heights Drive and 84 Avenue, in an effort to get away, the suspect rammed a police vehicle and tried to assault an officer.

Other officers used a conducted energy weapon to subdue the suspect, which allowed police to arrest him.

On Thursday, police said the suspect was facing charges ranging from impaired operation of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, to flight from police and two counts of assaulting a police officer.

Cardinal will remain in custody until his next court appearance, scheduled for September 3.
