Key event to be held in Berlin on 27 January 2015

Berlin, 24 July 2014 - The German Government today announced that it will convene the GAVI Alliance replenishment pledging meeting under the patronage of Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin on 27th January 2015.

The event will mark the final stage of the Alliance’s replenishment process, in which donors have been asked to commit an additional US$ 7.5 billion to support immunisation programmes in developing countries between 2016 and 2020. A fully funded Alliance would support countries to immunise an additional 300 million children, leading to five to six million lives being saved.

“The German government is looking forward to welcoming the GAVI Alliance partners within the framework of the German presidency in the G7 to Berlin for this important event,” said Dr. Gerd Müller, Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development. “Immunisation is one of the most cost-effective and impactful investments we can make to improve the health of children in the world’s poorest countries and we are pleased to be hosting this event at such a critical time for global immunisation.”

In May, the GAVI Alliance set out to donors how their investments will help accelerate countries’ progress towards sustainable immunisation programmes by building on the unprecedented number of vaccine introductions since 2011.

“The German government’s decision to host the GAVI Alliance pledging conference under the patronage of Chancellor Angela Merkel underlines Germany’s position as a global champion for children’s health,” said Dr Seth Berkley, CEO of the GAVI Alliance. “As an Alliance, we have set out ambitious but achievable plans to enable countries to build on our shared success since 2011 and we hope donors will back our plans to reach more children with lifesaving vaccines.”

Further details of the Berlin event, including the venue, will be released in due course.
