PATIALA: Discus thrower
Krishna Poonia impressed with an all-round performance to win the gold medal, but she missed the
Incheon Asian Games qualifying mark by less than a meter on the concluding day of the Federation Cup athletics tournament.
Poonia, who achieved a distance of 56.84 meters, failed to cross the qualifying mark of 57.55 meters, which the
Athletics Federation of India (
AFI) had set for the upcoming Asiad.
Punjab's
Navjeet Kaur Dhillon, who recently bagged bronze in the World Junior Athletics Championship, also failed to cross the qualifying mark and had to settle for silver behind Poonia.
Despite Poonia missing the qualifying mark, sources in AFI said that she would not miss the bus, as she is India's best player in the discus throw and her past performances would be taken into account.
