Guwahati: Assam BJP president Siddhartha Bhattacharya demanded President’s Rule in the state, stating that law and order has broken down completely in Assam.
“The state government has fanned the border dispute for the benefit of Congress,” Bhattacharya said.
The BJP-led Centre has strongly criticized the state government, alleging that the current unrest in Assam’s Golaghat district has been caused by the state’s failure to ensure safety of people living along the interstate boundary.

“It is unfortunate that people have died in police firing. Some were killed by miscreants along the border. The state government has utterly failed to control the situation and instill confidence among the people. Instead, the Tarun Gogoi-government has resorted to blaming the Centre for its failure to curb the violence,” Union minister of state for youth affairs and former Assam BJP president Sarbananda Sonowal said.
He said the situation took a turn for the worse because the state’s Congress government is not serious about solving the protracted border row.
“Had Tarun Gogoi been serious, the situation would not have escalated so quickly. It is the state government’s duty to provide safety and security to people, especially to those living near the interstate border. The Congress government, however, has failed to do so. The present violence shows that the Gogoi government is unable to handle the situation,” Sonowal said.

He added that he had spoken to the chief ministers of Assam and Nagaland and urged them to restore peace through dialogue. He also urged the involvement of communities from both states.
Sonowal accused Gogoi of playing politics by blaming the Centre for the Golaghat violence. “The Centre is always ready to help whenever the need arises. We are ready to assist the state governments. However, maintaining law and order is primarily the state’s task. Unfortunately, the Congress government in Assam has failed to do so. Gogoi should admit that there has been a failure on his part as he is in charge of the home department,” Sonowal added.
Sonowal said the situation took a turn for the worse because the state’s Congress government is not serious about solving the border row. He added that he had spoken to the CMs of Assam and Nagaland and urged them to restore peace through dialogue.
