Eruption of violence in the disputed area belt (DAB) between Golaghat district of Assam and Wokha district of Nagaland has turned into a flashpoint between the Central and the Assam government with chief minister Tarun Kumar Gogoi blaming Union home minister Rajnath Singh for not providing timely help and letting the situation go out of control.

While the Union home ministry retorted accusing Gogoi for behaving irresponsibly as the Centre had beefed up the security, voices from Assam in Delhi, especially the All Assam Student's Union (AASU), the central government to take action against Gogoi and intervene directly in border areas of Assam to save lives and restore law and order.

With further spread of violence resulting in three more deaths and several getting injured in clashes on Wednesday, some in police firing, prime minister Narendra Modi sought report from Union home minister Rajnath Singh to take stock of the situation and also asked him to intervene at the chief ministerial level, sources said.

The report prepared by the Union home ministry and despatched to Modi besides blaming Adivasi National Liberation Army (ANLA) outfit of Assam and Naga insurgent groups NSCN-KK and NSCN-IM also indicates hand of political leaders from within the Congress party opposed to Gogoi for fanning the protests and violence.

Singh spoke to both Gogoi and Nagaland chief minister TR Zeliang asking them to defuse the tension through personal intervention. Singh has also deputed minister of state for home Kiren Rijiju to visit Assam on Thursday and review the situation.

Rijiju is expected to meet Gogoi and Zeliang and thrash out ways to stop violence that is threatening to spread further by engulfing more areas of disputed area belt of Golaghat and Wokha which is inhabited by the Adivasis (ex-tea garden workers and some new immigrants from Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal), Nepalis and some local Assamese and also Naga tribes.

The Union home ministry is also thinking to send a central team to assess the situation in Golaghat and suggest measures to quell tension and restore normalcy.
