PUNE: A 66-year-old woman from Rajasthan, who had arrived in the city on Wednesday morning to meet her son, was run over by a speeding train while she was crossing the tracks at the Pimpri railway station. Her daughter-in-law, who had come to pick her up, also sustained severe injuries.
The government railway police (GRP) identified the deceased as Mithilesh Ratanlal Bharadwaj (66).
Her daughter-in-law, Rohini Dharmendra Bharadwaj (32), lives on Link Road in Chinchwad. Rohini is undergoing treatment in a private hospital in Chinchwad.
GRP investigating officer Dattatreya Girange told TOI that the accident took place around 7.45 am on Wednesday. Mithilesh Bharadwaj had boarded the Indore-Pune train on Tuesday night. "The train does not have a stop in Pimpri, but Mithilesh got down as the train had slowed down at Pimpri station because there was a passenger train ahead," Girange said.
Mithilesh's daughter-in-law Rohini was waiting at the Pimpri station. The two women jumped on the tracks as soon as the train left. But they did not notice the Sahyadri express coming from Pune station and got crushed under it.
Mithilesh died on the spot while Rohini sustained severe injuries on her hands and legs. "Rohini is undergoing treatment in a private hospital. Her condition is critical but stable," Girange said. Mithilesh Bharadwaj had come to the city all the way from Rajasthan to meet her son who stays in Chinchwad.
